‘Serve Her’ at EveryDayFiction

by RBK ~ February 13th, 2009

My story, Serve Her, has now been live at Every Day Fiction for about 9 hours, and the comments so far have been extremely complimentary. What a wonderful way to start a Friday morning. On days like this, I actually feel like a writer.

For anyone who has arrived here by following the story’s link, I want to stress that THIS IS NOT A FINISHED SITE. I apologize for the lack of content, for the incomplete posts, and for the unfinished design. I had intended to have a final version in place long before now, but sadly I am currently buried beneath an avalanche of work from paying customers, and my little vanity site here has unfortunately been relegated to the sidelines. Thanks for visiting, though…

First acceptance of 2009

by RBK ~ January 30th, 2009

Booyah! Just received word that the good folks at Every Day Fiction will be publishing my flash fiction story “Serve Her”. No set date yet, but still a very nice way to start the weekend–time to crack open that extra special bottle of $12 wine that I’ve been saving for a special occassion.

Nanowrimo 2008

by RBK ~ December 3rd, 2008

November saw my first participation in Nanowrimo (National Novel Writing Month, details at: www.nanowrimo.org), and although it was a unique and mostly enjoyable writing experience, my most prevalent thought now that December has arrived is: ‘Thank God that’s over!’

In hitting the 50,000 word mark, I averaged just under 2,000 words per day for 26 days (I took 2 days off, and finished 2 days early).

[add more, this is still for testing]

Beginnings…

by RBK ~ June 5th, 2008

Like so many other projects from my past, this website was started with enthusiasm, dedication, and a firm belief that it could be completed in a matter of days. Ten months later, I’m still far from a finished product (of course, in web design–as in writing–there’s really no such thing as ‘finished’). Apologizing in advance for the remaining limitations and design flaws, it’s time to get this thing live. I want to start talking….

I began writing fiction, back in 2001, with much the same arrogant ignorance. No sweat, I figured, this will be easy. Just pound out a handful of stories, send them on their way, and I’ll be a published author in no time. Yes, go on, enjoy your laughter, I’ll wait…. After receiving my first batch of form rejections, I sulked for a few months, then tried again in 2002. These form rejections pretty much convinced me that I had no talent, so I did what so many other frustrated scribes have done before me–I gave up.

When you love to write, though–when you dream up story ideas as you drive to and from work, when you ponder character motivations and scene construction in every chunk of media you consume, when a well-constructed sentence or witty turn of phrase brings you as much pleasure as the finest food or wine–giving up is never truly an option.

Thus, I began again in 2006, this time with more focus, clearer expectations, and far less arrogance. I read books on writing, I diligently practiced my craft, and I learned the immeasurable value of editing. I still receive more rejections than I care to mention, but I also have a few acceptances to prop me up when things seem hopeless.

I’m a writer. I always will be. I won’t give up again.
